Looks like they're just holding the thing in their mouth and if you've ever seen a horse or a foal play tug of war with their owner or another animal, it's not much different. Horses adore tugging on items and in fact will carry things around from time to time, apparently just to be different.

I would disregard the previous comment. Someone peed in their cheerios today. They're cgi, not real horses!! ;)
